Dental Implants

Do you have one or more missing teeth and need an artificial replacement to retain natural function? At Confident Smile Dental, our Mount Gambier clinics can provide advice and options for replacing your natural teeth. This includes cosmetic dentures and dental implants, which have become a mainstream part of modern dentistry. We can help you regain your smile with the highest quality implants.

What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are artificial roots that are securely attached to the jaw. They are cylindrical devices made out of medical grade titanium and are placed in the location of the missing tooth or teeth. They bond with the bone and are capped with a ceramic crown that imitates the existing teeth.

What Does a Tooth Implant Procedure Involve?

Our tooth implant procedure involves the following steps:

  •  Step 1 – The first step involved in our dental implant procedure is the development of a personalised treatment plan. Our dentists will work with you to create a plan that addresses your specific needs. We’ll also determine the implant option that is best for you.
  •  Step 2 – Next, the dental implant is placed into the bone socket, which takes around 6 to 12 weeks to anchor securely in the jaw. Once the implant is bonded to the jawbone, an abutment (a connector post) is attached to hold the new tooth.
  •  Step 3 – A crown is attached to the abutment. As the implant is secured within the jawbone, it looks and functions like your natural teeth.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Our teeth implants and cosmetic dentures offer various benefits, some of which include:

  •  They’re strong, stable and able to restore a lost tooth
  • They look, fit and function like a natural tooth and are built to last for years
  •  They help you maintain the innate shape of your face and smile
  •  Dental implants are the only restoration option that inspires natural bone
  •  With dental implants, you can speak easily and eat food that you love
  •  They prevent adjacent teeth from shifting

Types of Dental Implants

There are three main types of dental implants available, including Endosteal, subperiosteal, and zygomatic. Take a look at these types and choose the one which best suits your dental needs.

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are the most popular type of dental implants. They are suitable for most of our patients. However, they need a good, healthy jawbone to fuse with. They are shaped like screws and are placed in the jaw. Thereafter, false teeth are fitted onto the jawbone.

After the cosmetic dentures are fixed, it might take time to fuse and create a hold. After healing, the false teeth can be placed to fit with the remaining teeth. If you don’t want anything placed on your jawbone, you may wish to consider a different type of tooth implant.

Subperiosteal Implants

The second type of dental implant is a Subperiosteal implant. This type can be used as an alternative to Endosteal dental implants. Rather than fixing them in the jawbone, these dental implants are rested on the top of the bone, but under the gum.

In these dental implants, a metal frame is fixed under the gum. Thereafter, the gum heals and holds the frame in place. Following this, false teeth are fixed to the poles which emerge through the gums.

This process is useful for patients who don’t have a sufficiently strong jawbone, or patients who don’t wish to face the intensive dental procedure of adding a bone to that area.

Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic implants are a lesser-known type of implant supported dentures. This procedure is carried out in the event that the patient does not have enough jaw bone for the Endosteal dental implant.
